SQL 2005 & 2012

We have a server with SQL 2005 on it.  We just installed SQL 2012.  When I look in the services there is also an instance called SQLEXPRESS.  When I go into the control panel to uninstall a program I do not see any SQL Express installed.  I have stopped the SQL express instance and am trying to start the SQL 2005 and SQL 2012 instances at the same time.  We need the 2005 to be started to be able to look at the current system and 2012 needs to be started at the same time as we are trying to redo the system in SQL 2012.  Does anyone know why we can not start both instances at once.  If one is running and I try and start the other instance I get "Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQL2012) on Local Computer.  For more information, review the System Event log.  If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendory, and refer to service-specific error code 10048."  When I look in the System event log I see the following "The SQL Server (MSSQL2012) service terminated with service-specific error Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network addres/sport) is normally permitted."  Can anyone give me some information as to what the problem may be.  Thanks in advance.

Lock Pages in memory Security Template Error when adding SQL engine account

I have installed SQL 2012 with SP1 on Windows 2012.  I am trying to enable Lock Pages in Memory.  Following the steps from this article (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190730.aspx), I attempted to add the domain account I have running SQL Server Service in the GPEdit.msc, but receive the following error:

_______________________

Security Templates

An extended error has occurred.  Failed to save Local Policy Database.

_______________________

Can someone tell me why this might be the case?  Could there be a domain GPO or other security preventing this registration?

As a side note, I had a similar issue with SQL 2008R2.  However, in that case, I added the domain account to the 'local' group 'SQLServerMSSQLUser$Servername$InstanceName', then I added that group to the Locked Pages instead.  It was a work around, but it worked.  In SQL 2012, this group no longer exists.  What could be preventing the registration of the domain account in the Locked Pages 'add user or group' interface?

Thanks

Analysis Services Evaluation > Standard downgrade

$

Hi

I installed Sql Server 2012 Evaluation Edition.

After I downgraded it back to a properly-licensed Standard edition the Analysis Services service would not start, complaining:
"MSSQLServerOLAPService: “The service cannot be started: … The 'Analysis Services in Tabular Mode' feature is not included in the '64 Bit Standard' edition of Analysis Services"

I can understand what this is telling me, and I see that Tabular Model is not part of Standard Edition.

My question is this:
Is there something I can do to remove the unlicensed features, or do I need to uninstall and reinstall the whole kit and caboodle?

Thanks

SQL Server 2012 full install creates C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config folder

When I install SQL Server 2012 + SSAS,SSIS and SSRS the installation also creates a folder C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config with applicationHost.config file. This is being flagged by our security scanning software, that there is a mis configured default website. I was wondering if it is safe to delete \config folder and it's contents as we are not planning on using the IIS server on SQL server machine.

Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard SP2 from scratch

Hi,

I've just done a little "inventory" in an SQL server containing SQL Server 2008 R2.  I found out that after SP1, SP2, hotfixes, etc, everything related ONLY to SQL counts up to more than 7GB (if not more) in the hard drive!!  And guess the size of the database?  Only 300 MB!

So naturally, I find the files making up SQL server are excessively too big.

I would like to install SQL server from zero in other computer so I would like to ask one stupid question:

Is there a package/installer which includes everything from "SP0" up to "SP2" for SQL Server 2008 R2?  I have found the SP2 setup at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30437

but as far as I can tell, it needs SQL Server 2008 R2 being installed beforehand to work.  Hence my question.

Thanks in advance

Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v and .Net framework 4.5

Hello experts,

I have a SQL Server 2005 Instance running on "Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v" OS (this is the operating system name showing in the my computer properties) now i want to install another instance of SQL Server 2008 SP1 on the same server. I have different disk drives available for data, log and temp files. Basically this instance will be used for mirroring with another SQL Server 2008 SP1 (with .Net framework 4.5) running on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise .

Could you please provide your suggestion/ experience on the following questions,

-->Does the installation of MS SQL Server 2008 SP1 is supported on "Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v" OS?
-->Installation of MS SQL Server 2008 and MS SQL Server 2005 side by side is supported on "Windows Server Enterprise without Hyper-v" OS?
-->If Yes, which version of .Netframe work should I use, (.Net 3.5SP1 or 4.5)
-->If I use Net 3.5 SP1 Framework does it have any impact when I do mirroring with my principle SQL Server 2008 SP1 (with .Net framework 4.5)
--> Also during/after the installation does it requires any system reboot?

TCP Port changes for SQL instance aren't stored

$

I have an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 installed for use with SCCM 2012 which is installed on a separate server.

The TCP ports were all set to static ports for the instance before the installation of SCCM.

After SCCM 2012 installation the IP of the SQL Server was changed. There's a need to change the port the SCCM 2012 SQL instance is listening on. I've tried to change the static port to a different port number, but each time I restart the SQL Services for the instance so that the port changes can take effect, I return back to the TCP/Ip configuration page only to find that all the other changes I made are committed with the exception of the IPAll port that reverts back to the old static port that I set before I installed SCCM. Also the second IP reflects the old IP Address that existed before the change even after i manually changed it in that section. All other parameters that i change otherwise don't revert back.

I need assistance resolving this issue. Thank You

Hello ,

I hope you can help me to fix this issue, it's been 5 days since I a, trying to configure VPN in your 2008 and 2012 Servers. On both platform  (2008 and 2012) I am getting same error while configuring VPN (after role installation).

So, I have removed IPv 6 entry from the registry and now able to start server (not sure what configuration it took automatically).  I tried to disable "Routing and Remote Access" service and got the same error while enabling "Routing and Remote Access" is running but VPN is still not functioning properly).

Upgrade from SQL server developer 2008 R2 to SQL Server developer 2012

$

Hi,

We have bought 5 licenses of SQL server developer 2012.

This licenses provided us an option to use SQL server 2008 R2. And we have been using 2008 R2 till now.

But now we want to upgrade to SQL server developer 2012 edition

I want to know the process for up-gradation. When I looked at the licensing portal, it says "This product does not require a product key"

My questions are:

1) Should I download the 2012 version from licensing center and pass the downloaded copy to respective team members?

2) Can the team member download the SQL server 2012 developer edition from Microsoft site and install it on their machines?

3) Do we need to first un-install 2008 R2?

4) How the licensing can be managed in cases of products which say "This product does not require a product key.", i.e. how can I make sure that no more than 5 installations are done by the team

SQL 2012 SP1 CU8 - SSAS Unable to access SQL using default service account

Strange problem that I've been chasing all day:

  • Windows 2012 R2 Standard Edition
  • SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU8 Enterprise Edition

Relational DB and SSAS are installed on the same server.

OLAP database has connection string to local SQL database.

  • SQLNCLI11.1
  • Windows Auth
  • Initial Catalog is specified in the connection string
  • Test Connection succeeds in SSMS
  • Impersonation info is set to impersonate a specific user - users exists, password is correct, has necessary rights

Processing the OLAP database results in the usual flurry of error messages and events in the Windows Application event log with the key phrase "Client unable to establish connection; 08001; Encryption not supported on the client.; 08001."

There's a lot of FUD and hearsay on the internet about this error, most "solutions" recommend changing the connection string to use a different provider.  I've tried the SqlClient managed provider, the SQL Native Client, the "Microsoft OLE DB for Sql Server" provider and all fail similarly when processing the cube, and all succeed when testing the connection interactively.

The one thing that DID make a difference? I changed the service identity for SSAS from NT Service\MSOLAPServer (or whatever the default virtual account is) to a specific domain user and magically all problems went away. Keep in mind, the data source is set up to impersonate, not use the service identity, so why changing this made any difference is a mystery.

Any ideas?  I'd like to get to the bottom of this because it's come up several times on several different systems and it's always a research project to find a configuration that actually works.
