Trying to determine installed version of SQL

I am looking through a bunch of servers trying to determine the version of SQL.

I see the standard 9.xx, 10.xx, 10.5xxx and 11.xx

BUT I also see many 2007.XX, 2009.XX etc are these part of an SQL license or are they local DB versions?

Do I have to pay a license for them?
