installing backward compatibility server components in an existing sql server 2008 instance...does it work or not?

Hi..All,

We are installing sql server Backward compatibility components in an existing sql server 2008 pre production environment. Does it works? usually I do database compatability for backward component is concerned but in this server we are doing server level backward compatability in an existing instance of sql server 2008. Does it works? May I know How? or else SSMS is hanged in this case?
